Catherine Small

Catherine Small

Artist Statement

I am a painter and a printmaker. My work may best be described as narrative portraiture, influenced by the German Expressionists and the American Social Realists.

Content and texture are paramount to me when creating art. Most (but not all) of my works are figurative and explore varying degrees of tension, restlessness, sensitivity and/or desire. I combine intriguing figures with a myriad of color and textures. Together these visuals represent an observable harmony and beauty that may often blanket a complex emotion.
