Founding Member Spotlight: Deborah Schindler

Washington Printmakers Gallery is proud to spotlight founding member Deborah Schindler, whose exhibitions and community engagement have been enriching the DC art scene for decades!

Schindler has loved to draw practically her entire life. She started making prints as a sophomore at UCLA, and, after graduating, went on to receive an MFA in printmaking from The Ohio State University. She has lived in the D.C. area since the late 1970s and, in addition to pursuing her art career, has worked as an elementary school art teacher and Portuguese-language interpreter.

In 2024, Schindler presented “Expressive Impressions,” a vibrant collection of hand-pulled linoleum cuts and artist books, at the gallery’s Georgetown location. The show explored themes of rhythm, texture, and storytelling through printmaking. Her work was also featured in the exhibition “Variation and Repetition,” where her signature linoleum cuts stood out for their dynamic patterns and lively compositions. We look forward to seeing Deborah’s work on view for another solo show at the Gallery in the spring of 2026.

Beyond her Maryland studio and the gallery walls, Schindler remains active in the local arts community. In 2022 she took first place in the Glen Echo Labor Day Art Show (see image above). More recently she delivered a lecture about her printmaking technique at the Falls Church Gallery. Schindler will be at the gallery offering a demo at Art All Night on Friday, 12 September, so please join us!

Debbie’s commitment to mentorship and gallery sustainability continues to shape the direction of WPG. For a deeper look into her studio practice, watch this short video interview: In the Studio with Deborah Schindler

We celebrate Deborah’s enduring contributions to printmaking and her thoughtful leadership within our community.
