2026 Peggy Doole National Small Works

2026 Peggy Doole National Small Works Exhibition

Opening Reception: Saturday, August 1st, 1 - 4PM

This exhibition includes thirty-five contemporary artworks of printmaking: hand-pulled prints, screen prints, digital prints, fine art photographs, and three-dimensional work with print components. All were chosen by our juror Mark Jenkins, who is a veteran freelancer who has written for NPR's "All Things Considered," Washington City Paper, Time Out New York, WAMU-FM's "Metro Connection," Rolling Stone, Adweek, Slate, and reviewed visual art for the Washington Post for nearly 20 years.

Juror’s Statement: “As an art critic, I strive to evaluate works on their own terms, and not to enforce my personal taste. In jurying the 2026 edition of the Peggy Doole National Small Works Exhibition, I attempted to do the same. I wonder, as always, how well I succeeded.

Culling just 35 works from 361 submissions was a painful undertaking, and some choices were inevitably arbitrary. The artists did not make my job easier by proffering pieces that were poorly crafted. I was unable to eliminate any submissions on grounds of inadequate skill or technique. Instead, I tried to separate the excellent from the merely very good, and to pick artworks that were intriguingly unlike the others.

Certainly the selection is diverse, in media as well as theme. There are photographs and artist books as well as traditional prints, abstraction alongside representation, and hymns to life juxtaposed with ponderings of mortality. Many other shows could have been plucked from the same group of submitted artworks, but I hope the collective synergy of these 35 pieces is singular and compelling.”

Selected Artists include:

About Peggy Doole: The exhibit honors Peggy Doole (1934-2021), long-time resident of the Washington, D.C. area who shared her love of art by giving lectures, sponsoring exhibits, and leading tours at the Hirshhorn Museum, the National Gallery of Art, and other museums throughout Europe and the U.S. Her post-graduate museum work led her to a focus on, and a special passion for, printmaking that makes this honor a fitting tribute from her family.
