"For me, a place is something felt more than seen — a memory, a mood, a physical sensation as much as a view," says Wright. "Take Me to the River" turns that attention toward rivers as places of contradiction — Seneca Creek in Montgomery County and the Buëch in Haute-Provence, sites Wright returns to again and again as a climber and a birder. "They soothe and they destroy, they appease and they damage," she says. "This body of work asks you to sit with that duality — the same water that draws you in can just as easily take something from you." Working across macro photography, drone imagery, multiple exposures, and intentional camera movement, Wright doesn't document these rivers so much as interpret them, offering ephemeral glimpses of a place she keeps returning to.

About the Artist:

Claire Wright is a French-born photographer who divides her time between a small village in the Hautes-Alpes and Gaithersburg, Maryland, where she first arrived nearly thirty years ago as a guest scientist at the National Institutes of Health. Her work has appeared in two previous solo exhibitions — Reverie at Waverly Street Gallery (2023) and Secret Places at Washington Printmakers Gallery (2024) — and her large-format prints are held in corporate collections through Art_Works, Gray Haus Studios, and Rockville Movement climbing gym.
