Introduction to Linoleum Printmaking with Makenzie Lawson - Weekly on Tuesdays - 5 weeks

Tuesdays, July 1 to July 29 - 4:00–6:00 PM (except Tuesday, July 15- 5:00 to 7:00 P.M.)

The bold, satisfying craft of linoleum printmaking combines carving and printing to create striking, tactile artwork. This hands-on introductory class—perfect for beginners and curious creatives alike—guides you through the full printmaking process, from sketching the design to carving the block and pulling your first print. You will learn essential techniques for safely operating carving tools, transferring images with printing presses, and working with black and colored inks to create high-contrast prints. Whether you are looking to explore a new medium or simply get your hands dirty in the best way, this class offers a fun and rewarding dive into one of the oldest (and coolest) forms of printmaking.

Week 1: Memo and practice day. Intro to linoleum printmaking, famous printmakers (plus a few personal favorites), carving tools, shading and texture techniques. Practice, then begin carving first image

Week 2: Pulling black and white first proofs with finished, or about finished, blocks

Week 3: Color printing. Color wheel refresher, mixing inks from primaries

Week 4: Exploring techniques and styles: layering, registration, multiple blocks

Week 5: Wrap-up. Finish prints or create new ones using combined techniques. Finalize work with signing and titling (wet prints that can not be signed will be set aside for later pickup.)
