Food Photography & Scrapbook Cookbook Workshop with Jurnee Peltier – Syllabus Class Overview: This four-week, family-friendly workshop combines food, creativity, and photography. Each week, families bring a favorite dish based on the weekly theme, learn the fundamentals of food photography—including lighting, angles, props, and styling—practice shots on their phones, and capture the perfect image using professional photography gear. Participants will print their photos and design scrapbook-style cookbook pages. By the end of the workshop, families will have a fully personalized cookbook filled with recipes, memories, and professional-quality images.
Week 1 – Desserts: Lighting & Angles Theme: Sweet treats (cookies, cupcakes, brownies, tarts) Learning Goals: Fundamentals of lighting: natural vs. artificial Exploring angles: overhead, side, and close-up shots Simple styling and props for desserts Activities: Practice photographing your dessert on a phone Capture a “hero shot” using professional camera Print photo and create first scrapbook page
Week 2 – Small Plates & Appetizers: Composition & Styling Theme: Finger foods, dips, mini sandwiches, small plates Learning Goals: Composition and arranging multiple items Using props, tableware, and backgrounds Color balance and visual storytelling Activities: Phone practice shots of styled appetizers Professional camera “hero shot” Design scrapbook page and add printed photo
Week 3 – Main Courses: Storytelling & Depth Theme: Entrees (pasta, rice bowls, protein dishes, plant-based mains) Learning Goals: Framing and creating visual depth Storytelling through food styling and props Highlighting textures, layers, and garnishes Activities: Phone practice shots for main courses Professional “hero shot” capture Print photo and complete scrapbook page
Week 4 – Fun Drinks: Color & Finishing Touches Theme: Drinks (smoothies, mocktails, milkshakes, hot beverages) Learning Goals: Capturing color, transparency, and motion Final photo editing tips Completing the personalized cookbook Activities: Practice shots on phone and professional camera Print photos and design final scrapbook pages Assemble and review completed family cookbook
Learning Outcomes: By the end of the workshop, participants will: Understand the fundamentals of food photography (lighting, angles, composition, props, styling). Capture high-quality images of food using both phones and professional photography equipment. Design and decorate scrapbook-style cookbook pages featuring their dishes. Compile a fully personalized family cookbook filled with recipes, photos, and memories.

About Jurnee
Jurnee Belou Peltier is a photographer and visual storyteller with a background in studio photography, lifestyle imagery, and creative direction. She holds a master’s degree in Multimedia, Photography, and Design from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University and has worked across editorial, commercial, and brand projects. Passionate about combining art with everyday experiences, Jurnee brings her love of food, photography and hands-on creativity into this interactive family workshop!
