2019 National Small Works Exhibition

Love, archival print by Sandra Chen Weinstein

Reception and Award Ceremony: Saturday, August 17, 3-5pm

Washington Printmakers Gallery and the Washington Print Club are pleased to present National Small Works 2019, an exhibition of outstanding contemporary works by artists from across the United States. These include hand pulled prints, photographs, and artists books, selected from submissions from more than 120 artists.

The first prize winner will receive a solo exhibition at Washington Printmakers Gallery in 2020. The Washington Print Club, Dan Weldon, Dick Blick, Renaissance Graphic Arts, and Plaza Art Materials have contributed prizes to this exhibition.

This annual juried exhibition, which is celebrating its 22nd anniversary, has attracted an exciting range of entries using both traditional and experimental techniques. The juror is JD Talasek, Director of Cultural Programs of the National Academy of Sciences.

"The work in this exhibit represents a wide range of creative engagement with materials and technology, both traditional and new," Talasek says. The subject matter of the works is diverse, addressing matters ranging from migration issues to gender and identity. "Fresh unique views of nature are represented that are simultaneously poetic and challenging," he notes. "Other artists help us imagine space differently through abstraction and color that attempts to expand on the notion of beauty and emotion."

Winning entries range from artist books to paper dolls to woodcut prints. As Talasek says, "The work in this exhibit represents a wide range of creative engagement with materials and technology, both traditional and new." The works address matters ranging from migration issues to gender and identity. "Fresh unique views of nature are represented that are simultaneously poetic and challenging," he notes. A catalog of the exhibition is available in hard copy or pdf format and can be previewed andordered online.

About the Washington Print Club

Founded in 1964, the Washington Print Club is open to all who are interested in fine art prints and the graphic arts. The Club organizes frequent programs for its members, including curator-led tours of important print-related exhibitions, visits to significant private collections and artist studios, panel discussions, and lectures.

Each year, the Club awards a cash prize to the best print student in an arts program at a college or university in the Baltimore-Washington area. The first prize award in the National Small Works Exhibition is another way the Club supports and encourages artists working in print.
