Constructed Prints

The prints in this show are constructed from bits and pieces of multiple photographs (my own.) Essentially, I use the image to edit itself by lifting bits of color or components of design from one area and adding it to another. The end result can be a long way from the original image, but I always feel the integrity of the original object is respected, even enhanced.

Balance, rhythm, and color: my work is strongly influenced by graphic design. Originally focused primarily on objects, I have expanded to landscape construction, interiors, and portraits. For me, a successful piece works at multiple levels: from a distance it has impact and coherence; the midrange shows the piece as primarily intended; and the close-up provides fine detail, both of the photograph itself and the texture of paper and ink.

Print as Object

I use a digital camera and tools (Photoshop and InDesign) to create my work. Then I print, using a Canon 44" printer, pigment ink and several types of fine art paper. Doing my own printing allows me to study a piece and modify it as often as necessary to reach the right final point– often a lengthy process which can be both a luxury and a burden.

I consider myself a printmaker using photography for source material. My goal is image as print, and print as object. The digital image is just a preliminary stage. The goal is always the same: a strong, beautiful, and carefully crafted object, a fine print on paper.
