Intaglio Prints by William Demaria

12,000 years ago, giant walls of ice, as tall as skyscrapers, scraped and shredded the landscape leaving gestural carvings in its wake. Despite these processes occurring thousands of years ago, moments and memories of this movement still exist. Geologic time records history well beyond the scale of humanity, yet as we access it, we understand it with the same sensations and experiences we encounter every day. What happened over thousands of years, we perceive as occurring in moments. Impartial reactions of climate and physics, we understand as artifice.

Moments/Memories looks to record this tactile human understanding of incomprehensible forces. Be it geologic history living in the natural landscape, human history preserved in the constructed landscape, or even quiet moments in the woods, the artwork in this show attempts to represent the landscape as it was experienced and remembered. Instead of attempting to create artwork that represents the physical landscape as it exists, Moments/Memories strives to capture the imperfect perception of reality influenced by interests and experiences of an individual.
