linocut, drypoint, and monoprint with David Brosch (8 sessions)

On Wednesday, April 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, May 6, 13, 20

from 10 a.m. to 12 P.M.

Over eight weeks, students are introduced to key printmaking techniques including monoprinting, drypoint, and linocuts.

Weeks 1-3 --- Introduction to printmaking and an explanation of several of the print media will be learning including monoprinting, drypoint, and linocuts.  I will bring examples of my work and discuss the process.  I will explain the various steps on how to go from idea, to image, to cutting or scribing images on plates or blocks, and finally how to ink and wipe.  Students will be given a soft cut block and I will explain how to use the linocutter.  In week 2, if students have done any work at home, or if they haven't, they can continue to work on their block, or for those who finished, I will demonstrate how to ink and use the press. Near the end of class in week 3, I will explain the various ways a monoprint plate can be used and will give the students a homework assignment to come to class in week 4 with drawing(s), images, or concepts to be transferred to the plates and then inked and pulled.

Weeks 4-5 --- Using a monoprint plate I will explain how to apply inks in various additive or subtractive methods.  Show how plates can be used for collage.  Start these processes in week 4 and continue in week 5.  Near the end of class 5, ask students to be prepared to have a photo or drawing for week 6 that can be placed underneath the monoprint plate and then etched (scribed or scratched) into the plate.

Weeks 6+7 --- Using one or both of their monoprint plates, scribe images into the plates and even before the students are finished, ink and print some of the plates to demonstrate the effects of line depth, crosshatching, and how the quantity/quality of lines can affect an artwork.  Work on one or more plates by scratching, inking, wiping, and pulling multiples.

Week 8 --- Print the various completed blocks and plates and practice inking and wiping and even registration.  Finally, give students a questionnaire to fill out describing the positives and negatives of the completed eight week print class.
