Layered Lives: Women in Print
This October, Washington Printmakers Gallery members Kristine DeNinno, Suzanne A. Bartlett, and Clare Winslow are featured in Layered Lives: Women in Print at Bethesda's Gallery B alongside local printmaker Barbara Bitondo. The exhibition brings together four artists whose work demonstrates the expressive possibilities of contemporary printmaking through layered imagery, innovative techniques, and deeply personal narratives. Through diverse approaches to the medium, the artists explore themes of memory, identity, transformation, and connection.
Presented at Gallery B, the exhibition invites visitors to experience contemporary printmaking that moves fluidly between observation and imagination, material process, and storytelling. Additional information about the exhibition can be found at Layered Lives: Women in Print.
Award-winning printmaker Kristine DeNinno is known for pushing the boundaries of traditional printmaking through large-scale, experimental works that incorporate monoprint, collagraph, fiber elements, and sustainable materials. Madonna I, a standout piece that exemplifies DeNinno's fascination with transformation, growth, and the interconnectedness of natural and human experience. Richly layered with feminine forms intricate textures, and embroidery elements, the piece blurs the boundaries between printmaking and fiber art. Through her innovative use of materials and process, DeNinno creates visually immersive work that celebrates resilience, renewal, and the beauty that emerges through change.

In her distinctive mixed-media practice, Suzanne A. Bartlett combines printmaking, photography, textile traditions, and assemblage to create richly layered visual narratives. Her work often draws on mythology, memory, and women's stories, weaving together image, texture, and symbol. Persephone Sleeps, an 8" × 18" mixed-media work on wood panel is one of the works that will be on view at Gallery B. Translucent leaves drift across a luminous current of blues, greens, and golds, creating a dreamlike composition that rewards sustained looking. Inspired by the myth of Persephone, the work evokes cycles of transformation, renewal, and return while showcasing Bartlett's ability to fuse intricate layering and storytelling into a visually compelling whole.

Clare Winslow is a Maryland-based printmaker whose abstract works investigate memory, time, perception, and the natural world. Working primarily with screen-printing and mixed-media processes, she builds luminous surfaces through layering, transparency, and process-driven mark making. Carry, a mixed media screenprint on wood panel measuring 12 × 24 × 1.5 inches will be featured in this exhibition. In this work, overlapping mesh-like structures, gestural linear forms, and fields of vibrant blue, gold, black, and white create a dynamic sense of movement and balance. Suggesting both physical and emotional networks of support, Carry invites viewers to reflect on what we bear, preserve, and pass forward. Through carefully layered imagery and an intuitive sense of composition, Winslow demonstrates how printmaking can transform simple forms and materials into evocative visual metaphors.

A Celebration of Contemporary Printmaking
Together, these four artists demonstrate the breadth and vitality of contemporary printmaking today. While each brings a distinct visual language and perspective, their works share a commitment to layering, experimentation, and the expressive power of process. From Kristine DeNinno’s explorations of growth and renewal, to Suzanne A. Bartlett’s mythic narratives, to Clare Winslow’s meditations on connection and memory, Layered Lives: Women in Print reveals how layered materials and layered experiences can intersect to create powerful works of art. Barbara Bitondo will present four works in her Revelations series -- sculptural monoprints that extend printmaking beyond the wall.
Visitors to Gallery B will encounter prints and mixed media works that reward close looking, inviting reflection on the many ways personal histories, natural cycles, and creative processes shape our lives. The exhibition offers a compelling introduction to new work by three Washington Printmakers Gallery members and highlights the continuing vitality and innovation of contemporary printmaking.
